Local media on Wednesday questioned that claim, quoting a relative of one man involved saying drunk British soldiers had started the fight.

British soldiers have been involved in disorder while on exercise in Latvia in the past, with two accused of damaging a taxi while drunk earlier this year.

Latvian state police confirmed they had arrested a British citizen born in 1987 following the incident.

A statement said the "conduct of arrested person was inadequate and this person started conflict with other man and caused him minor injury".

The case has now been passed on to Latvia's military police for further investigation and a decision on whether to draw up an administrative violation act.

Local media quoted the father of one man caught up in the brawl who said the provocation had been "100 per cent from the British side".

Edmunds Aizkalns told LSM that his 23-year-old son Aksels, an administrator at a law firm, was hospitalised after being punched by a British soldier.

He said: "The provocation was 100 per cent from the British side. They were behaving idiotically and just looking for a fight. They were completely drunk. There was no camera crew, but of course people filmed what was happening on their mobile phones. Hopefully in the next two or three days that will come out and people will be able to see for themselves what happened."

An Army spokeswoman said: “We are aware of an incident involving two soldiers in Riga. The circumstances are being investigated and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.” The Foreign Office declined to comment.

«The Daily Telegraph & Courier».
